Push notifications in DriveBattle: you decide what arrives

A big crew sends a lot of messages. In DriveBattle for Android you switch each type of push off on its own, mute a single crew or let only the important things through. Delivery runs on a service operated on DriveBattle servers, not on Firebase.

Settings, Notifications

Each type has its own switch there. The “Messages” group holds “Push for messages” for direct messages, “Crew chat”, “Push for friend requests” and “Crew join requests”. Under “Default for all crews” you find “Someone drove”, “Someone is live”, “Crew joins”, “Comments”, “Reactions”, “New posts”, “Comment likes”, “Record overtaken”, “Champion crew”, “Badges” and “Level up”. “Maintenance due” comes on top. Every switch is on by default. On Android 13 and newer the app shows three examples of what it would send before the system dialog on first start, and tells you that you can change the choice at any time in the settings.

Motorcycle only or car only

“Someone drove” and “Someone is live” can be limited to “All”, “Motorcycle” or “Car”. The choice appears once the switch is on. The filter belongs to you as the recipient: two crew members with different filters get different results from the same drive. If the vehicle type of a drive is unknown, for example because it has no garage assignment or comes from an older app version, no message arrives while a filter is set.

Mute per crew

In each crew the bell icon opens the levels. “All” follows your settings. “Only highlights” lets live, events and the champion title through and hides posts, badges and chat. “Mute” is available for 1 hour, 8 hours, 1 week or “Until I turn it back on”. “Customize” lets you pick per type. A crew level applies in both directions: with “Customize” you can switch on something in one crew that is off everywhere else. Under “Exceptions per crew” in the notification settings you see every crew with its own level and can reset them. A notification also offers “Mute crew (8 h)”. If you share several crews with the sender, the message arrives as soon as one of them allows it. In crews with more than 50 members the app suggests “Only highlights” once. Direct messages, friends, support and maintenance do not depend on crews.

What you cannot switch off

Some messages always arrive because you need to know about them: actions against your account such as removed content or a suspension, invitations to share live, the acceptance of your join request and a change of crew owner, credits from the referral bonus and messages from the DriveBattle team to everyone.

When which message arrives

“Someone is live” arrives at most every 30 minutes per rider. “Record overtaken” arrives when someone passes you in the 7-day distance ranking after a ride. Badges get one message per upload, even if several unlocked. A change of the champion title is announced once. “Maintenance due” comes at 90 percent of the interval and once more when the maintenance is due. The reminder for a crew event comes 24 hours ahead.

Delivery without Firebase

A self-operated service (ntfy) on DriveBattle servers delivers push. Each account has its own random topic. To receive it the app keeps a permanent connection in a foreground service, and Android shows a minimised ongoing notification for it. The server delivers the text in the language you set in the app. Tapping a message opens the matching place, such as the chat, the post or the event. The chat icon counts direct messages separately from the bell.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mute a single crew?
Yes. The bell icon in the crew offers “Mute” for 1 hour, 8 hours, 1 week or until you change it. You can also tap “Mute crew (8 h)” on a notification.
Can I get messages only for motorcycle rides?
Yes, for “Someone drove” and “Someone is live”. There you choose “All”, “Motorcycle” or “Car”.
Does push run through Firebase or Google?
No. A self-operated notification service on DriveBattle servers delivers the messages.
Why does the app show a permanent notification?
It belongs to the push connection. The app keeps it open in a foreground service so that messages arrive, and Android shows a minimised notification for it.
Are notifications Premium?
No. All switches, the crew levels and the vehicle filter work without Premium. Premium covers individual features; the overview is on the Free and Premium page.
Can I switch off all notifications?
Each type can be switched off on its own. The exceptions are the messages listed above, such as actions against your account. You block all notifications of the app in the Android settings.
