Update maps and navigation data automatically over Wi-Fi

Premium

When a downloaded map or navigation package gets outdated, DriveBattle spots it by its version number. On Wi-Fi the app starts the update by itself. Over mobile data you get a notice and a button. DriveBattle runs on Android.

Premium: auto-update for offline maps and navigation data. During the beta everything is unlocked.

How the app knows an update is due

Every map region and every country package has its own version number on the server. The app compares it with the number on your phone. When a country is rebuilt, only its map and its navigation package count as outdated. Your other countries stay untouched.

What happens on Wi-Fi

You open Settings, Offline maps. The app loads the country list with the current versions and compares it with your downloads. If something is outdated and the phone is on Wi-Fi, the update starts without another tap and keeps running in the background, even when you leave the app. What counts is whether Android reports the network as unmetered, meaning without a data limit. A normal home Wi-Fi qualifies, mobile data does not. The check runs when you open this screen.

What happens over mobile data

The app starts no update on its own. A navigation package can run to several GB, and the package for Germany is around 5.7 GB. The app does not pull that quietly through your data plan. Instead an outdated region shows "Update available", the country row gives the number of updates, and an update icon starts the update on tap. "Update all" at the top of the screen loads outdated maps and navigation data together. You decide whether to download over mobile data.

What keeps working during the update

For maps, the old version keeps running until the new one is complete. The row shows "Updating…" with the progress and the note "old map still works". For navigation data the app removes the old package before the new one is loaded. Until the download finishes there is no offline route for that country. Let an update finish at home before you ride.

Auto-update is Premium

Offline maps and navigation data are part of Premium, and so is the auto-update. During the beta everything is unlocked. After that Premium is paid, the purchase runs through Google Play and Google Play shows the price. Without Premium the app starts no updates and "Update all" shows a lock. Maps already downloaded stay on the device but are not used. Deleting always works.

Frequently asked questions

When does DriveBattle update my offline maps automatically?
When you open Settings, Offline maps, something is outdated and the phone is on Wi-Fi. The update then starts without another tap.
Does DriveBattle download updates over mobile data?
Not on its own. Over mobile data the app shows "Update available" and you start the update yourself.
What does the auto-update refresh?
Downloaded map regions and the navigation data of country packages. Each region and each country is compared with the server version separately.
How do I see that an update is ready?
The region shows "Update available", the country row gives the number of updates, and for navigation data the Offline navigation row shows "Update available".
Can I keep navigating offline during an update?
The map stays usable, because the old version keeps running. The navigation data of the affected country is missing until the download finishes.
How do I update the app itself?
Google Play updates the app. The auto-update covers only maps and navigation data.
Is the auto-update free?
It is part of Premium. During the beta everything is unlocked, after that Premium is paid. Google Play shows the price.
