Measure motorcycle lean angle with your phone
Premium
You need no extra sensor. DriveBattle reads the tilt sensor, gyroscope and GPS speed of your Android phone and shows after every motorcycle ride how far you leaned left and right.
Premium: display and evaluation of the lean angle. The measurement runs for everyone. During the beta everything is unlocked.
How the app measures
Two sources run together: the tilt of the phone against gravity, and an angle the app calculates from GPS speed and the yaw rate of the corner. The second source does not drift and keeps the value steady in long corners. The zero point resets itself on straight stretches and after every pause of the measurement.
Phone in any orientation
Upright, landscape or sideways on the handlebar: the app detects how the phone sits and learns which side is left and which is right. A phone mounted sideways still delivers the real angle.
When the app measures
It measures only on a motorcycle, only from about 20 km/h and only while the phone sits firmly in its mount. If you pick it up, the measurement pauses and recalibrates afterwards. A tilted phone cannot create a record value. In a trouser pocket the values are unusable. After the ride the app asks once where the phone was: mount or pocket. The answer earns XP and improves the evaluation.
The server double-checks
On upload the server checks the values for plausibility. Single outliers are dropped. If the phone sat crooked for the whole ride, the server discards the measurement entirely. Lean angle is also a leaderboard metric, for motorcycles only.
Measured for everyone, display with Premium
The measurement runs for all users, so no ride is missing after an upgrade. Display and evaluation are Premium: the half-circle dial in the cockpit (green, orange or red by angle, the peak per side stays as a mark), the curve in the ride summary, the markers on the map and the lean angle in the 3D video. During the beta everything is unlocked.
Frequently asked questions
- How is motorcycle lean angle measured?
- DriveBattle uses the sensors of the phone in its mount: tilt, gyroscope and GPS speed. They produce a signed angle for left and right.
- Which app can measure motorcycle lean angle?
- DriveBattle for Android. The app measures automatically on every motorcycle ride as soon as the phone sits in its mount and you ride faster than about 20 km/h.
- Does the measurement work in a pocket?
- No. The values are unusable there. After the ride the app asks whether the phone was in the mount or in a pocket and evaluates accordingly.
- From which speed does the app measure?
- From about 20 km/h. Below that the measurement pauses.
- Does the app measure in a car too?
- No. Lean angle is measured on motorcycles only.
- Is the lean angle display free?
- Display and evaluation are Premium. The measurement runs for everyone, and during the beta everything is unlocked.
